Description

The growth of the M198 155mm towed howitzer were only available in 1968 when a lightweight replacement was in fact tried the WWII period M114 155mm howitzer. A testbed model was created and built at Army's Rock Island toolbox in 1969 and firing tests started in 1970. After initial shooting tests, two model M198 howitzers was indeed delivered to the Army in 1972, and after extra evaluating, the M198 howitzer entered full-time production in 1978. The very first Army M198 device became functional in April of 1979. Since entering manufacturing, over 1,600 products had been manufactured, because of the last devices taken from Rock Island in 1992.
