The F/A-18 "Hornet" is just one and two-seat, dual motor, multi-mission fighter/attack aircraft that may operate from either aircraft providers or land bases. The F/A-18 fills a variety of functions: environment superiority, fighter escort, suppression of enemy atmosphere defenses, reconnaissance, forward air control, close and deep atmosphere help, and almost all enough time hit missions. The F/A-18 Hornet replaced the F-4 Phantom II fighter and A-7 Corsair II light assault jet, and replaced the A-6 Intruder as these aircraft had been retired through the entire 1990s.
