The CX500 made its debut in 1980 at IFMA trade show in Cologne, Germany. The Honda CX500 Turbo, that was released in 1981, had been the entire world's very first turbo-charged motorcycle. Turbocharged machines offered greater power and torque for greater performance, but also caused a delay in throttle reaction during acceleration. The delay in throttle reaction presented technical challenges for turbocharged motorcycles. Honda and IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries) overcame this issue by using computerized fuel injection to produce the engine aided by the optimal level of gas constantly. The CFI transformed the V2 OHV motor, which produced 48hp and 4.1kg/m of torque into a high performance motor with 78hp with 7.5kg/m of torque. Other advanced include a cowling, Honda's Pro-Link back suspension, and a 4-step adjustable anti nosedive front suspension system. The CX500 ended up being capable of a maximum speed of over 120mph.
