The MX-5, also known as Miata in united states and Eunos Roadster in Japan, is a lightweight two-seater roadster, of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, built by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan. The model ended up being introduced in 1989 during the Chicago Auto Show. The MX-5 had been conceived as a tiny roadster – with light weight and minimal mechanical complexity limited just by appropriate and safety requirements; technologically contemporary, but a philosophically direct descendant of little British and Italian roadsters of the 1960s like the Triumph Spitfire, MG MGB, Fiat 124 Sport Spider, Alfa Romeo Spider and Lotus Elan.
