Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) had been created in 1954 and quickly began the deployment of landing vessels. At that time, only tank landing ships borrowed from the U.S. had been used. From 1965, however, japan produced, "Atsumi" and "Miura" kind landing ships, deployed one after another. With the rising size of vehicles and gear become packed, and as a result of the expanding selection of duties become performed, the implementation of multi-purpose landing vessels with increased loading capability and maneuverability became necessary. Plans had been used in 1993 plus in March of 1998, the largest transportation ship for the JMSDF, the "Ohsumi" had been implemented. She boasts an immense top deck, with an overall period of 160m, breadth of 25.8m and homes a vehicle loading area on the front and a helicopter landing deck in the rear. The front of the woman hull supports a 100m long vehicle deck. In conjunction with top of the deck, the loading of between ten and twenty tanks and about forty large scale vehicles is possible. Cars are packed on to the hull via two huge part ramps. Straight movement of packed vehicles is enabled by two elevators, one 20t and another 15ft, the lifting of cars from deck to deck. The hull can accommodate 130 team and 330 tropps. In the way it is of a big scale normal tragedy, "Ohsumi" is with the capacity of accommodating significantly more than 1000 people and is completely equipped with medical gear. In back of this hull, there was a 60m long room for 2 LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushions) place end to end. The first transportation hovercraft for the JSDF, the LCAC trips on a cushion of air over water or land at a height of 1.2m at a maximum rate of 40kt (74km/h). With a loading ability of 50t, overall duration of 27m, the LCAC can load one Type 90 tank or over ten light cars, manned by a crew of 5 and up to 24 JSDF troops.
The "Ohsumi" kind of vessel allows the efficient transportation of JDS ground troops to strategic areas, rescue of civilians in the event of major normal tragedy, and possibly functions as a supply base for un Peace maintaining Operations.
