The Challenger demonstrated and proved its combat worth throughout the current Gulf Conflict. In addition to painting the tank with a standard sand color, numerous changes for desert operations were accomplished, including a better coolant system; better air cleansers; a strengthened transmission; additional side skirts from Chobham armor for added protection, plus bolt-on Reactive armor placed on the front area; an extra 200 liters of fuel was carried in outside tanks mounted on the rear of tan, which greatly stretched its range; additional external stowage bins; and utilization of low or zero maintenance batteries.
Despite operations into the harsh desert environment, the Challengers maintained an outstanding "in solution" and availability figure that exceeded 90per cent. This success, along side its accurate and heavy firepower, pointed toward Challenger as being among the best main battle tanks used through the Conflict.
