Initially conceived for use by German forces during WWII, the Jerry Can's design became brilliant it was reverse-engineered for use by the Allies. The 20-liter container ended up being tough and compact, allowing them to be easily stowed aboard vehicles. It had a straightforward but effective lid process with three handles.
