This type of model kit depicts the F-14A Tomcat variation. The F-14A had been the initial two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor fighter variation the U.S. Navy. It first flew on December 21, 1970. As a U.S. Navy fighter it fulfilled the twin functions of long range interceptor and atmosphere superiority fighter, and soon after bomber. Deployed from 1974 to 2006, it effectively employed a "swing wing", which offered adjustable sweep. The F-14A, which covers all the early variations, had been probably the most prolifically-produced variation for the Tomcat. 79 were exported to Iran before U.S.-Iranian relations started to decline, and soon after participated in Iran-Iraq War.
