The Gneisenau went into commission on 21st May, 1938. Ranking using the Scharnhorst, she had been the biggest and a lot of effective battleship within the German Fleet of the days. Her displacement was indeed announced to be 26,000 tons, in reality her standard displacement was 31,800 tons. The primary armament consisted of nine 28 cm weapons, of smaller in calibre than those of the identical class ships possessed by other nations. Another armament, but had been effective sufficient and consisted of twelve 15 cm guns, fourteen 10 cm AA weapons, sixteen 37 mm AA machine weapons, ten 20 mm AA machine firearms and six 53 cm torpedo pipes. She had been protected with strong armour and, regardless of the woman large displacement, had a rate of 32 knots. Most of these factors combined to help make the Gneisenau one of many first-rank high-speed battlecruisers worldwide.
